The story of Appleton Est Rum

Appleton Estate sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica, and the estate traces its history back to 1749. The business behind it, J. Wray & Nephew, has been controlled by the Campari Group since 2012. The person most closely tied to the rum's style is Joy Spence, who joined as head chemist in 1981 and in 1997 became master blender, the first woman to hold that job in the industry.

Signature Blend, which is what this bottle is, is a blend of pot still and column still rums. Appleton describes it as having no age statement but an average age of four years, and Difford's Guide lists it as 15 selected rums. It is made with Jamaican limestone-filtered water and has no added flavouring, and it is bottled at 40 per cent alcohol by volume. All Appleton rums are aged in once-used American oak barrels.

The brand describes it as harvest gold and amber, with dried apricot, fresh peach and a hint of molasses, finishing mildly sweet with short citrus and nutty notes.

Appleton names the Jamaican Daiquiri as its signature serve for this rum. It also works in a long drink with ginger beer and lime, or in a rum punch.
