The story of Captain Morgan Dark Rum
Captain Morgan Dark Rum is made by Diageo and bottled at 40 per cent, five points stronger than the brand's Original Spiced Gold. It is its own bottle in the range, separate from Black Spiced, which is also 40 per cent.
The brand has Jamaican roots. Seagram, which owned Captain Morgan before Diageo, bought the Long Pond distillery in Jamaica around 1953 to supply rum for the recently introduced Captain Morgan brand. Diageo has owned it since 2001.
Dark rum is the style for long drinks. Expect caramel, brown sugar and toffee, with a ripe banana note, a sweetness that holds up when the glass is topped with mixer. Pour a measure over plenty of ice, add cola and a squeeze of lime, or use ginger beer for a sharper, drier drink. A wedge of lime cuts through the sweetness. The bottle is a full litre.
