The story of Wild Turkey 101
The Wild Turkey name goes back to a 1940 hunting trip. Austin Nichols executive Thomas McCarthy took whiskey samples from the warehouse along with him, and his friends began asking for more of that wild turkey bourbon. Wild Turkey 101 is the bottle most closely tied to that story, and it is still made in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
The 101 is a Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 101 proof, which is 50.5 per cent alcohol. The whiskey is aged between six and eight years in American white oak barrels with the deepest alligator char, and the mash is known for a high share of rye and a relatively low share of corn. That gives a bourbon that is sweet at the front but never soft.
Vanilla and caramel come first, followed by oak and baking spices, with cinnamon and old leather in the aroma. The finish is long, dry and spicy, with a bite of orange peel.
The higher strength means it carries through ice and mixers. It makes a punchy Old Fashioned or Manhattan, and stands up to ginger beer with lime in a Kentucky mule. Neat, it suits a slow glass with a splash of water.
