The story of Jose Cuervo Esp Gold
Jose Cuervo is made in the town of Tequila, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, by a family owned company. Its history reaches back to 1795, when the first Vino Mezcal de Tequila was made, and its La Rojeña distillery, founded in 1812, is the oldest active distillery in Latin America.
Especial Gold is a mixto, which means it is not made from 100% agave. Tequila rules only require at least 51% blue agave, and the remaining sugars can come from other sources. The gold is a blend of reposado, which has spent time in oak, and young unaged blanco tequila. In the glass it is light gold, with sweet, gentle agave and hints of oak and vanilla. This bottle is 38%.
It is made for mixing, and Cuervo itself points to the margarita as its natural home, served frozen or on the rocks. A Mexican Mule is just as easy: 60 ml of tequila, 15 ml of lime juice, 10 ml of gomme syrup and 90 ml of ginger beer over ice, finished with a lime wheel and a sprig of mint. It also works in a tequila sunrise.
