The story of Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend

Mount Gay is made in Barbados, and its oldest surviving deed is dated 1703, which the distillery cites as proof it is the world's oldest running rum distillery. The name comes from Sir John Gay Alleyne, who managed the estate and after whose death in 1801 it was renamed. Rémy Cointreau has been the majority shareholder since 1989.

The XO was the first XO in the rum category, created in 1991 by master blender Jerry Edwards. The Triple Cask Blend is a blend of mature rums aged between five and seventeen years in American whiskey, bourbon and cognac casks. The rum is distilled in a traditional column and double retort pot still and bottled at 43 per cent.

The result is smooth and round. The nose is vanilla, oak and dry spice, and the flavour runs to salted caramel, baked fig, clove and dark chocolate, finishing long and creamy.

Mount Gay's own advice is to drink it neat or over ice. For something different, its Coco Hill pours the XO over one large coconut water ice cube.
