The story of Nanny Goat Pinot Noir

Nanny Goat Vineyard began as a naming problem in 2004. Owner John Valmorbida, who runs a family wine distribution business out of Melbourne, took friends on a walk above Queenstown to come up with a name for his new Central Otago brand. The story goes that they wandered off the track, ended up stranded on a rocky outcrop, and someone joked that they looked like a mob of nanny goats. The name stuck, and the first Pinot Noir was released in 2005.

This is the regional Pinot Noir, a blend made in a more approachable style than the top wines in the range. The fruit comes from the home vineyard at Queensberry, halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka, and from long-term partner vineyards around Central Otago. Winemaker Alan Peters-Oswald joined in 2010 after five years at Cloudy Bay, and his philosophy is not to intervene too much, so the grapes and the place do the talking.

The winery describes a dark colour, ripe cherry and smoky spice, on a fruit-forward palate with a firm structure. That weight suits food with some savour: roast chicken, mushrooms on toast, or a platter of cured meats. Opening the bottle half an hour ahead softens it a little.
