Victoria Bitter, known to most drinkers as VB, comes from Melbourne. Thomas Aitken is credited with first brewing it at the Victoria Brewery in 1854. That brewery was one of six taken over when Carlton & United Breweries was registered in 1907, and CUB is now owned by Asahi.
The name is a little misleading. VB is not a bitter in the English sense but a standard commercial lager, pale and light with a modest hop bitterness rather than a heavy one. Its strength has moved over the years. It was trimmed to 4.6 per cent in 2009 and put back to 4.9 per cent in 2012.
The can has its own history. CUB says VB's first steel can appeared in 1958, and that the original was bigger than today's and harder to open. These days the beer is sold in 375 ml and 500 ml cans, and a six pack of the 375 ml size is the easy way to buy it.
Serve it well chilled with barbecued sausages, burgers or fish and chips. It is a straightforward, easygoing lager, and it suits plain, honest food.
