The story of 42 Below Vodka
42 Below is a New Zealand vodka created by Geoff Ross, who left a career in advertising and started out distilling in his garage with a small pot still. He came up with the idea in 1996 and the first bottles went on sale in 1999. The name comes from the 42nd parallel south, which runs through New Zealand. Bacardi bought the brand in 2006 and still owns it.
The vodka is made from non GM wheat and run through a four column distillation, a long way from that first pot still. The brand credits spring water for its purity. It was first bottled at 42% and was later brought into line at 40% across all markets, which is the strength of this 700 ml bottle. In the glass it is crystal clear, with a clean nose and hints of aniseed, a touch of sweetness at first, then a peppery heat and a finish of aniseed and liquorice.
That clean, slightly peppery profile makes it a flexible base. Serve it very cold with soda and a squeeze of lemon, shake it into a martini, or build a Moscow mule with lime and ginger beer.
