The story of Benedictine

Bénédictine is a French herbal liqueur made in Fécamp, on the Normandy coast. Wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand found a formula among inherited manuscripts in 1863, recreated the elixir after many trials and launched it in 1864. He built the distillery at Fécamp in 1882, on the site of the former abbey, and the liqueur is still made there. The bottle shape was trademarked in 1864 and has not changed since.

The recipe is a closely held secret. It uses 27 herbs and spices, with saffron giving the liqueur its amber colour, and it is bottled at 40% ABV. The letters D.O.M. on the label stand for the Latin Deo Optimo Maximo, meaning to God, most good, most great. In the glass it is sweet, herbal and lightly spiced.

Serve it neat in a small glass after dinner, or over ice. The best known mix is B&B, Bénédictine with brandy, which dates from the 1930s. Stir the two over ice, strain over a large cube and finish with a twist of lemon zest.
