The story of Burnt Hill Premium Vodka
Burnt Hill is a New Zealand vodka created by two friends, Ben Paul and Nathan Johnson. Johnson is a pilot, and the name comes from a small extinct volcano on the Canterbury plains that he often flies over. The first release in 2018 was a run of just 250 bottles, and by 2022 the vodka was in more than 150 outlets around the country.
The base spirit is sugarcane, chosen by the makers for its sustainable growing and a naturally soft sweetness. It is distilled eight times in a column reflux still by their master distiller and cut with New Zealand spring water, with no additives. The last step gives the vodka its volcanic angle, as every drop is passed through a crushed volcanic rock filter. The bottle is 700ml at 40% alcohol, sealed with a glass stopper.
Johnson says it is made to be enjoyed on its own, the way you would a fine wine or an aged whisky, so try it neat and chilled first. It also suits a clean martini, a vodka soda with lime or a Moscow mule.
