The story of Licor 43 Liqueur

Licor 43 is a Spanish liqueur from Cartagena, a port city on the south-east coast of Spain. It is made by the Zamora family company, Diego Zamora, and the recipe was developed by the siblings Diego, Angel and Josefina Zamora together with Emilio Restoy. The name, Cuarenta y Tres, is the number of ingredients that go into it.

Only a handful of those ingredients are public, and the full recipe stays with the family and the director of the factory. Vanilla, orange peel, lemon, coriander and tea are the few that are known. The result is a bright yellow liqueur at 31% alcohol, sweet and citrusy with a strong vanilla note and a little spice.

It is easy to use. Straight over ice is the simplest way to pour it. It is also the base of the carajillo, a coffee drink popular in Mexico, where it is served with espresso and ice. In the Canary Islands it goes into the barraquito, a coffee made with espresso, milk and Licor 43.
