The story of Old Mout Scrumpy

Old Mout Scrumpy comes from the cidery in the Moutere Valley near Nelson, where Gifford and Wanda Tait started making apple wine and cider from their family orchard in 1947. Wanda set up the cidery in her shed, and the Old Mout label grew from there.

Today the cider is made by Redwood Cider Co. in Nelson, which DB Breweries bought into in 2012 and renamed. It is fermented from fresh apple juice rather than concentrate, and the cidery uses processing grade fruit, including apples that packhouses turn away for minor colour or blemish problems. Nelson is the second-largest apple growing region in the country, and the cidery is New Zealand's largest, producing about 10 million litres a year.

This is the plain apple Scrumpy in the 1.25 litre bottle, at 8%. Apple skin flavour leads, with medium sweetness and a finish that lingers at the back of the mouth. That sweetness makes it good company for salty, fatty food. Try it with roast pork, a ham sandwich lunch or a block of sharp cheddar, and keep it in the fridge until the table is set.
