The story of Scapegrace Black Gin

Scapegrace is a New Zealand distillery started in 2014 by brothers in law Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin. It launched as Rogue Society, then changed its name to Scapegrace, an eighteenth century word for a rogue, after a name clash with a US brewery stood in the way of the European market. Scapegrace Black followed in September 2019, and its first three month supply sold out in a day.

It is billed as the world's first naturally black, colour changing gin. The colour is built from botanical extracts: aronia berry for red, saffron for orange, pineapple for yellow, butterfly pea for blue and sweet potato for purple. It is made on a wheat based neutral spirit with water from the Southern Alps, and it is bottled at 41.6 per cent. It won gold at the 2022 Global Gin Masters.

The palate is full bodied with a menthol like crispness, citrus freshness and a hint of spice, finishing on candied sweet potato and pineapple. The brand's own serve is one part gin to three of premium tonic over ice with a slice of green apple. Watch it turn from black to purple pink as the tonic goes in.
