The story of Moet & Chandon Brut NV Giftbox

Moët & Chandon began in 1743, when Épernay wine merchant Claude Moët started sending Champagne wines to Paris. The Chandon name joined in 1833 with the arrival of Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles as a partner. Now part of LVMH, the house owns around 1,190 hectares of vineyard and releases about 28 million bottles a year, which makes it one of the biggest names in Champagne.

Brut Impérial is its best seller and the cuvée that sets the house style. It has been made since the 1860s, and it blends all three Champagne grapes: 30 to 40 per cent Pinot Noir, 30 to 40 per cent Meunier and 20 to 30 per cent Chardonnay. Each bottling draws on more than 100 different wines, and 20 to 30 per cent of those are reserve wines kept back from earlier harvests, which is how the taste stays so steady from one release to the next.

In the glass it is green apple and citrus with white flowers and a toasty brioche note, dry and lively. The house suggests 8 to 10 degrees, cooled gradually so the bubbles aren't shocked. It suits oysters and seafood platters, raw or lightly cooked white fish, and poached or roast chicken with a light sauce.
