Laphroaig 10 Year Old is a distinctive Islay single malt known for powerful peat smoke. Intense smoke, iodine and sea salt are balanced by sweetness and oak, finishing long and bold.
Peat smokeOakLaphroaig 10 Year Old is the original bottle of the Islay distillery, and the base that every other Laphroaig expression is built on. Laphroaig draws its water from the Kilbride Dam and runs three wash stills and four spirit stills. This one is bottled at 40% after ten years in ex-bourbon casks.
The malted barley is dried over a peat fire, and the peat comes from Islay itself. That smoke is the first thing you meet: strong, with seaweed and a medicinal edge over a hint of sweetness. Iodine and brine run through it too. The palate is full-bodied, with surprising sweetness, salt and layers of peat, and the finish lingers.
A few drops of water open up more aroma, so it is worth trying it both ways. The smoke stands up to strong flavours: dark chocolate, chargrilled rib steak or smoked fish such as kipper.
