The story of Yalumba The Cigar Cab Sauv 750

The Cigar is named for a place, not a shape. Coonawarra growers coined the name for a narrow, cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil sitting over limestone, and this Cabernet comes from the Menzies Vineyard on it, where the vines average around 20 years old. It is part of Yalumba's Distinguished Sites range.

The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is crushed into small static fermenters, spends about a week on skins, goes through malolactic fermentation, and is then matured for 14 months in French and Hungarian oak. Roughly a quarter of the oak is new French, and the rest is older French and Hungarian.

Expect Satsuma plum, liquorice, violets and a touch of sea spray on the nose, then dark blueberry, savoury tapenade and dried herbs on a supple palate, with bitter chocolate tannins and the firm structure Coonawarra Cabernet is known for. It sits at 14% alcohol. Yalumba pairs it with barbecued lamb loin chops, or a mushroom, tomato and basil lasagne.
