The story of Welcome Swallow PinotN

Welcome Swallow is a Central Otago Pinot Noir made by Fast Flying Wines, a family owned producer. The label is named for the welcome swallow, the small, fork-tailed bird often seen darting around lakes and rivers in the south of the country.

The bird has its own story. It arrived in New Zealand on its own from Australia, with the first recorded breeding at Awanui in Northland in 1958. By 1965 it had spread across the North Island and was breeding in the South Island. In Australia it was seen as a herald of spring, which is where the name comes from.

Central Otago is the world's southernmost commercial wine region. High mountains shield it from New Zealand's maritime weather, giving it the only truly continental climate in the country, and Pinot noir accounts for more than 80 per cent of plantings.

It is a fruit-driven Central Otago Pinot, with dark red fruit flavours and a touch of spice. Retailers pair it with roast duck and lamb. Serve it just below room temperature.
