Warm spiceSmoking Loon is a California wine brand from Don Sebastiani and Sons, the family company Don Sebastiani started with his sons Donny and August after leaving Sebastiani Vineyards. The name comes from Don's love of cigars and his father August's passion for waterfowl. The first vintage was 1999, and that original wine was a Cabernet Sauvignon.
Zinfandel reached California by the 1850s, carried by Gold Rush era nurserymen, and by the late nineteenth century it was the state's most widespread variety. DNA testing in 2001 showed it is the same grape as Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski, and it is also grown in Italy as Primitivo.
Smoking Loon's Zinfandel is a ripe, full bodied red with plum, fig and vanilla, smoky oak and a soft finish. Zinfandel can ferment to high alcohol, so pour modest glasses and keep food on the table.
Serve it just below room temperature with barbecued ribs, burgers or a meaty pizza.
