The story of The Ned Pinot Gris
The Ned comes from Marisco Vineyards, a family-owned Marlborough winery run by Brent Marris, who is its founder, proprietor and winemaker. Marris grew up in Marlborough and had run Wither Hills, which he sold to Lion Nathan in 2002. His next project was a 268 hectare vineyard on ancient river terraces beside the Waihopai River, and The Ned is the label that carries the Waihopai Valley name.
Pinot Gris is a grape that ripens late, and its skins turn deep red before picking, which can give the wine a faint pink tint. In the glass this one is rounded and fresh, with pear, apple and floral aromas and enough acidity to keep it lively. Marisco also makes Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir under The Ned label.
Serve it well chilled. It works with Asian dishes such as dim sum and pad thai, and it is a good match for prawns or a light salad.
