The story of Buffalo Trace Bourbon

Buffalo Trace is made in Frankfort, Kentucky, at a distillery named for the ancient buffalo trackway that crosses the Kentucky River nearby. Records show distilling on the site from 1775. Harrison Blanton built the first distillery there in 1812, Edmund H. Taylor Jr. bought it in 1870, and George T. Stagg took over eight years later. In 1886 Stagg installed steam heating in the warehouses, an early step toward climate controlled ageing. The distillery kept running through Prohibition by making whiskey for medicinal purposes.

The bourbon itself arrived in August 1999, two months after the distillery dropped the name George T. Stagg and became Buffalo Trace. The Sazerac Company has owned the place since 1992. This one litre bottle holds the flagship Kentucky straight bourbon, bottled at 90 proof, or 45 per cent, from the distillery's Mash Bill #1 and matured in new charred oak barrels in century old warehouses.

The nose is vanilla, mint and molasses. The palate is sweet, with brown sugar and spice giving way to oak, toffee, dark fruit and a touch of anise, and the finish is long and smooth.

The distillery's own Old Fashioned is two ounces of bourbon, a quarter ounce of simple syrup, two dashes each of aromatic and orange bitters, and an orange zest. It also works neat or on the rocks.
