The story of Skyy Vodka
Skyy is a San Francisco vodka. It was launched in 1992 by Maurice Kanbar, an entrepreneur who set out to make a spirit with as few impurities as he could manage. It now belongs to the Campari Group, which bought the business in 2009.
The method is the selling point. The vodka is made from wheat, run through four distillation columns and then filtered three times. Skyy's own site calls this quadruple distillation and triple filtration, and says the brand was among the first to push the idea. The bottle is a deep cobalt blue, which makes it easy to spot on a shelf.
This bottle is labelled 37.5 per cent alcohol by volume, which is the strength Skyy is sold at in Australia and New Zealand. In the United States it is 40 per cent.
In the glass it is clean and restrained. Difford's Guide notes a very light sweetness, a creamy texture and a touch of black pepper on the finish. That quiet character suits long drinks, so try it with soda water and lime, with tonic, or in a Cosmopolitan or a vodka martini.
