The story of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum

Captain Morgan is named after Sir Henry Morgan, the Welsh privateer born around 1635 who raided Spanish targets from his base at Port Royal, Jamaica, between 1667 and 1671 and later served as lieutenant governor of the island. The Seagram company began making the rum brand in 1944, and Diageo has owned it since 2001. Outside Jamaica, Diageo produces it. Inside Jamaica, a separate and unrelated rum with the same name is made by J. Wray and Nephew.

Original Spiced Gold is the flagship. It was reformulated in 2023 to include Madagascar vanilla. In the UK and EU it is labelled a rum based spirit drink rather than rum, because of its lower strength and added ingredients, but it is sold internationally as spiced rum.

The classic serve is Captain and Cola: rum and cola over ice with a lime wedge squeezed in, a serve the brand itself recommends. It also works in a Dark and Stormy with ginger beer, or poured over ice on its own.
