The story of Glenlivet 15YO
The Glenlivet 15 Year Old is the French Oak Reserve, a Speyside single malt bottled at 40%. The Glenlivet was among the first Scotch distilleries to use French oak, and this is the bottle that shows it.
The French wood is Limousin oak, felled in the Dordogne and more often found in cognac and fine wine than in whisky. Part of the spirit rests in it, and a little sherry oak goes into the blend. Limousin oak has a low density, so the spirit sinks deep into the wood and picks up spice. The result is a deep gold whisky with a creamy, buttery nose, a fruity and nutty palate of apple crumble, cinnamon and dry almond, and a lingering finish of sweet almonds and spice.
Taste it straight, then add a little water and a sweeter red apple note comes forward. It is a good whisky for the end of a meal, with a handful of almonds beside the glass.
