The story of Scrumpy Raspberry

Scrumpy is made by the Harvest Cidery in Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island. The original Scrumpy Apple launched in 1991, and Scrumpy Raspberry followed in 2012, so the raspberry has been part of the range for well over a decade.

The raspberry is blended with locally grown apples, which keeps the base a proper apple cider rather than a berry soft drink. The label calls it fresh with a tang, and it pours a clear raspberry pink from a red plastic bottle with a screw cap that reseals. At 8.2 per cent alcohol it sits a good step above most ciders on the shelf.

The name is borrowed from the West Country of England, where scrumpy described a rough, harsh farmhouse cider made from unselected apples. This version is a long way from that, light, fruity and fizzy.

Serve it ice cold, over plenty of ice. A 1.25 litre bottle at 8.2 per cent holds roughly eight standard drinks, so treat it as a bottle to share and pace, not one for a single sitting.
