The story of Black Heart Rum

The Black Heart label carries the date 1842. Older bottlings carried the name of Henry White and Co of London and were Demerara rum from Guyana, and Black Heart supplied the Royal New Zealand Navy's daily rum issue until the 1960s. The navy then changed supplier, first to Bundaberg and later to Jamaican rum, and the daily issue ended on 1 March 1990.

The bottle on the shelf today is labelled Original Superior Caribbean Dark Rum, a smooth blend, at 37.5 per cent in one litre. It pours a deep red brown and has a full body, and as a blend it is built for mixing rather than for collecting.

Pour it over ice with cola or ginger beer, or add a squeeze of lime for a longer drink.
