The story of Finlandia Vodka

Finlandia was created in 1970 by Alko, Finland's state alcohol company, and launched in a bottle designed by Tapio Wirkkala. Difford's Guide calls it the world's first designer vodka. It reached the United States the following year, among the first Nordic vodkas sold there.

It starts with Finnish six-row barley, which gives a lower yield than two-row barley. The barley is fermented and distilled at Koskenkorva in Ilmajoki, in western Finland, using seven stainless steel columns. The spirit then travels by rail to Rajamäki, north of Helsinki, to be blended with water from nearby glacial springs. Difford's says that water needs no chemical treatment, only a mechanical filter to remove visible particles.

The Rajamäki distillery dates back to 1888, when it began life as a yeast factory for bread. It stayed in operation through Finnish Prohibition, and the Finnish state bought it in 1920.

In the glass it is very clean, with a little cracked black pepper, a hint of barley bread and a toasty nut finish. Serve it well chilled, straight from the freezer or over ice, or build it into a vodka martini or a long drink with soda water and lime.
