The story of Absolut Vodka

Absolut is made in Åhus, a small village in southern Sweden, and nowhere else. Its roots reach back to 1879, when Lars Olsson Smith introduced continuous distillation and sold his spirit as Absolut Rent Brännvin, which means absolutely pure vodka. A hundred years later it was reintroduced under the name Absolut and launched in New York in 1979.

The recipe is short. Winter wheat grown around Åhus is sown in autumn and harvested the following year, spending the cold months under Swedish snow while the grain hardens. The water comes from wells more than 100 metres deep, and the spirit is distilled continuously before it is bottled at 40 per cent. In the glass it is full bodied and smooth, with a clear grain character and a hint of dried fruit.

The bottle is modelled on an eighteenth century medicine flask found in an antique shop in Stockholm. Absolut is made for mixing, whether that is lemonade or ginger beer for a simple highball, or the classics: a Vodka Martini, an Espresso Martini, a Mule or a Bloody Mary.
