The story of Te Mata Est Gamay Noir

Te Mata brought a Gamay Noir clone called à Jus Blanc into New Zealand in 1995, and this light red is still made from it. The fruit is grown at the estate's Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard in Hawke's Bay, the winery's only source of Gamay.

Gamay is the grape of Beaujolais, and Te Mata borrows that region's method for a large part of the crop. In carbonic maceration whole berries ferment inside their skins, which lifts the fruit and floral aromas. The rest of the fruit is fermented in the usual warm way, for more structure, and the finished wine spends about eight weeks in seasoned French oak.

It is a light bodied, juicy red, with candied cherry, ripe raspberry and a dusting of cinnamon, and tannins so soft they barely register. It is vegan friendly and comes under screw cap.

Chill it for twenty minutes or so before opening. The soft tannins make it an easy partner for charcuterie, grilled sausages and spicy dishes.
