The story of Sawmill IPA 6x330B

The Sawmill Brewery began in 2004 in Leigh, north of Auckland, and has brewed from Matakana since 2016. Mike Sutherland and Kirsty McKay run it today, and in 2019 it became the first New Zealand brewery to earn B Corp certification. A fire badly damaged the Matakana brewery that October, and Sawmill beers were brewed at other breweries around the country while it was rebuilt.

This India Pale Ale is 5.8% ABV and comes as six 330ml bottles. The style began as English pale ale packed with extra hops so it would survive the long sea voyage to India, and the American take on it, which the label points to, puts hop flavour ahead of malt. Sawmill sums its version up as hoppy, vibrant and thirst quenching.

Serve it cold but not frozen, and pour it into a glass so the hop aroma can open up. The bitterness cuts through rich, salty food, so burgers, fried chicken and a sharp cheddar all suit it.
