The story of Martell VS Fine Cognac

Martell is the oldest of the big four cognac houses. Jean Martell was born on Jersey in 1694, moved to Cognac at about twenty one to build a brandy trading business, and founded the house in 1715. He took his family's coat of arms, a swift with three hammers, as the house emblem. Martell is part of Pernod Ricard today.

VS stands for very special, the youngest grade in the range. Cognac rules set a minimum of two years in oak for a VS, and every cognac is double distilled in copper pot stills. On this one the eaux de vie, the young spirits, come from a single distillation source, and they age in fine grained French oak. It is bottled at 40 per cent.

The style is fruity and bright. Plum, apricot and candied lemon lead, with cinnamon and a little toasty oak behind. That makes it an easy cognac to mix. Pour it over ice with a long splash of ginger ale and a twist of lemon, or use it in a Sidecar. It is also pleasant neat in a small glass.
