The story of Alexandre Burgaud Villages

Alexandre Burgaud is a young Beaujolais grower who started his own domaine in 2013 on old family vines around the village of Lantignié, after learning the trade from his cousin Jean-Marc Burgaud, who makes wine in Morgon. His vines are often 50 years old or more, planted on rocky blue granite of the kind found on Morgon's best slope, the Côte du Py.

The Beaujolais-Villages is made the traditional way. Gamay bunches go into tank whole, and the berries ferment inside their skins in a carbonic style. That method gives the wine its violet and red berry perfume and a juicy palate, while the granite shows up as a long, mineral finish. Tannins are low, so the wine is soft enough to be served with a little chill.

Beaujolais like this is meant to be shared at the table. Charcuterie and roast chicken are the classic matches, and fried whitebait, the local friture, is the regional favourite. It also works as an aperitif, or with a mild curry, where its fresh fruit cuts through the spice.
