The story of Rampur SM Asava

Rampur Asava comes from Rampur Distillery in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, the first and largest distillery of the Radico Khaitan group. The company began in 1943 as the Rampur Distillery and Chemical Company, made bulk alcohol for years, and launched its own brands from 1999. Rampur Indian Single Malt is now a range, and Asava joined it in October 2020.

Asava is matured in American bourbon barrels, then finished in Cabernet Sauvignon casks that previously held Indian red wine. It carries no age statement. Master distiller Anup Barik has said the distillery's wide swings in weather encourage experimentation, and Asava was his way of seeing how the dark fruit of an Indian Cabernet would shape the whisky.

The result leans fruity. Expect apricot, blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum, then vanilla and spicy oak, with some dryness from the wine finish. Pour a small measure into a tulip shaped glass and let it sit for a few minutes. It goes well with a plate of aged cheddar and dried apricots.
