The story of Laphroaig Select Cask

Laphroaig has been made on the south coast of Islay, at the head of Loch Laphroaig near Port Ellen, since 1815, when Donald and Alexander Johnston founded the distillery. The Johnston family ran it until Ian Hunter, who died in 1954 and left it to his manager Bessie Williamson. In 1994 it received the Prince of Wales's Royal Warrant, awarded in person during a visit to the distillery.

Select is meant to soften the heavy peat of the 10 Year Old. Rather than one cask type it is a vatting from several, including quarter casks, Pedro Ximenez sherry hogsheads and European oak, and it is bottled at 40%. Peat smoke is still the first thing you meet, followed by ripe red fruit and a sweet opening, then dry, ashy smoke and a finish of marzipan and lime.

Try it neat first, then with a few drops of water to open it up. The smoke and sweetness sit well beside dark chocolate or a mature cheddar.
