The story of Bacardi Reserva 8YO
Ocho is Spanish for eight, and the number is the whole idea behind Bacardi Reserva Ocho. It is a golden rum that spends at least eight years in the barrel, and Bacardi calls it The Family Reserve, inspired by a family recipe from 1862.
Bottled at 40 per cent, it sits in Bacardi's dark rum category despite its golden colour. Bacardi describes it as complex, layered and mellow, with dried fruit, spice and oaky vanilla. The nose is dried apricot and banana leaf, the palate is oak and spice, and the finish is expansive and well rounded. The brand's own shorthand for the lot is stone fruits and spices.
Bacardi's simplest serve is a measure of around 45 ml poured into an old fashioned glass and left un-chilled, with no garnish, so you can take your time over it. For a mixed drink, the Ocho Old Fashioned uses about 60 ml of the rum with a small measure of simple syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice in a rocks glass and finished with an orange peel twist. The brand also points to a Rum Negroni and an Old Cuban.
