Vanilla & caramelBananaOakBacardi was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 by Facundo Bacardí Massó, a Spanish businessman. The bat on the label comes from the fruit bats that lived in the rafters of the first distillery, and the family has kept the company in its hands ever since. After the Cuban government took the company's assets in 1960, the business moved abroad. Its head office has been in Bermuda since 1965 and its main distillery, near Cataño in Puerto Rico, makes about 85 per cent of its rum.
Bacardi Gold, also called Carta Oro, is made from sugarcane molasses, yeast and water. It is fermented, distilled, aged, filtered and blended. The rum rests in toasted oak barrels, which give it its golden colour, and it is mellowed with a blend of charcoals that its rum masters keep to themselves. Charcoal filtering goes back to Facundo himself. Expect vanilla, caramel, toasted almond, banana and orange peel, with a light oaky finish that is dry with a hint of sweetness.
Gold rum suits mixed drinks. The Cuba Libre, with cola and a squeeze of lime over plenty of ice, is the classic, and the brand also pours it in a Rum Toddy. This bottle is a full litre.
