The story of Bernheim Original Whisky

Bernheim Original is a Kentucky straight wheat whiskey from Heaven Hill, distilled at the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville. Heaven Hill presents it as the first new style of American whiskey since Prohibition. The distillery was built in 1992 and bought by Heaven Hill in 1999, and the whiskey takes its name from the site.

American law requires wheat whiskey to be made from at least 51 per cent wheat. In place of the rye that gives many bourbons their spice, wheat leads the mash here and gives a softer, rounder whiskey. It is aged for seven years in traditional open rickhouses and bottled at 45 per cent.

The aroma is mildly sweet, with vanilla and honey. On the palate expect toffee, berries and a little spice, and the finish is warm toasted oak. Honey suits it in the glass as well as in the flavour, so a Bee's Knees made with honey syrup, lime juice and a splash of ginger liqueur works well. It is equally good poured neat and left to open for a minute.
