A Caribbean rum with rich vanilla, caramel and tropical fruit. Smooth and slightly sweet, with banana and a warm finish.
Bumbu takes its name from an old Caribbean habit. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries sailors and merchants in the West Indies added local fruit and spices to their rum and called the result bumbu. Sovereign Brands recreated a modern version of that idea, working with the distillers at the West Indies Rum Distillery on Barbados.
The Original is made on Barbados, at a distillery founded in 1893 that has operated for more than 120 years. The rum is distilled in two continuous stills, made in small batches, and reduced with water naturally filtered through the island's coral limestone. It is a rum with natural flavours, which puts it in the spiced rum camp.
That shows in the glass. Madagascar vanilla and soft caramel come first, with toasted oak, then cinnamon, allspice and roasted nuts over a mild sweetness, and some tasters pick out banana. The finish is light and smooth.
Because it is sweet and soft, it mixes well. Pour it over ice with ginger beer and a wedge of lime, or with cola and a squeeze of lemon. A splash of pineapple juice leans into the tropical side.
