The story of Burn Cottage Moonlight PinotN
Burn Cottage is a biodynamic estate in Central Otago owned by the Sauvage family of Chicago. Marquis and Dianne Sauvage bought the property at auction in January 2002, and it has been farmed biodynamically from the start, following a proposal from Marquis's friend Ted Lemon, with Peter Proctor and Rachel Pomeroy advising. Grazing animals supply the compost, and the estate also keeps cover crops and native plantings.
Moonlight Race is named after a channel of water that passes through the property, one of the hundreds of races built in the early years of European settlement to carry water down from the mountains. The wine is a Pinot Noir blended from the estate's three vineyards: Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, and the Sauvage and Sappa vineyards in Bannockburn. It is bottled under screwcap.
The winemaking is gentle. Grapes are hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of whole-cluster and destemmed parcels, then aged around a year in French oak, usually a fifth to a quarter of it new. The result is a medium bodied red with red fruit at the centre. It suits roast chicken or pork, and a mushroom dish with some earthiness.
