The story of Charles Orban Carte Noire Brut

Charles Orban is a Champagne house in Troissy, a village on the left bank of the Marne. The slopes around the village are planted mostly with Pinot Meunier. The Orban family has been in the Marne valley since the eighteenth century. Charles Orban left the village cooperative in the late 1950s and launched his own brand in 1960, and since 1997 the house has belonged to the Rapeneau family of the G.H. Martel group.

Carte Noire is the house's brut. Meunier gives Champagne a soft, round fruit, and that suits this wine. The blend has changed from release to release, and tasters have noted ripe yellow fruit, brioche and a little honey beside the citrus and green apple, with a creamy mousse and a dry, fresh finish.

A French guide calls it a gourmand Champagne, one that is generous rather than austere. That makes it an easy bottle for an outdoor aperitif or for starters, such as smoked salmon, soft cheese or a plate of cured ham.
