The story of Christian Drouin Calvados VSOP

Christian Drouin is a family estate in the Pays d'Auge, the part of Normandy that makes the most prized calvados. Three generations of the Drouin family have grown apples, made cider and distilled it, and Guillaume Drouin, the third generation, joined in 2004 and now runs the house.

The VSOP is built from cider made from bitter, bittersweet, sweet and sharp apples. The cider is double distilled in copper pot stills, as the Pays d'Auge appellation requires, and the spirit is then aged for at least four years in small oak casks. It is bottled at 40 per cent.

The house describes a light amber colour with sweet cider, baked apple, gingerbread, vanilla and cinnamon on the nose, moving to almond and beeswax. The palate is supple, with a tarte Tatin character and a fruity apple finish. Drink it neat in a small glass after dinner, or use it in cocktails where you want apple brandy. It goes well with apple tart or an aged cheese.
