A bourbon blend with smooth complexity, toffee and oak flavours and a warm finish.
Four Roses is made in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, at a distillery built in 1910 in Spanish Mission style and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Four Roses name was trademarked in 1888. Seagram took the brand over in 1943, and the Japanese company Kirin has owned it since 2002.
What sets the distillery apart is that it makes ten different bourbons, from two mash bills and five yeast strains, and blends them to build each product. Small Batch uses four of the ten: OBSK, OESK, OBSO and OESO. The recipes are an equal mix of the lower-rye E mash bill and the higher-rye B mash bill, and of the K yeast, which adds a little spice, and the O yeast, which adds rich fruit.
A batch averages about 250 barrels, with the barrels typically six to seven years old and the batch averaging around six and a half. Small Batch first appeared in 2006 at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, and the first bottling sold out.
The result is a mellow bourbon with a soft, long finish. Sip it neat, pour it over ice, or use it in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, where the gentle spice sits well with bitters and sweet vermouth.
