The story of Glenkinchie 12YO

Glenkinchie sits in farmland at Pencaitland in East Lothian, about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The name is a corruption of De Quincy, the family that first held the land, and the distillery beside the Kinchie Burn dates from around 1825, when brothers John and George Rate began making whisky there.

The Rates went bankrupt in 1853 and the buildings became a sawmill. Whisky only returned when the plant was rebuilt in 1881. Diageo owns it today and runs one wash still and one spirit still. The malting floors, idle since 1969, are now a museum.

The 12 Year Old replaced an earlier ten year old, and the extra two years in oak brought more vanilla. It is bottled at 43 per cent and was named Best Lowland Single Malt at the 2013 World Whiskies Awards. On the nose it is barley and cut grass with a little cream soda sweetness, then custard, honey and cooked apple on the palate, finishing with dry oak, clove and a touch of salt.

It is light enough to stretch into a tall highball with soda water and a strip of lemon peel, and it sits comfortably beside smoked salmon or a mild, creamy cheese.
