The story of Havana Club 7YO

The Añejo 7 Años was created in the 1970s by the late Don José Navarro, and it was the first aged Cuban rum introduced to the world as a sipping rum. It is made in Cuba by the Havana Club distillery, a joint venture between Pernod Ricard and the Cuban state company Cuba Ron.

It is a blend of rums of different ages, and the youngest rum in it is seven years old. The rum is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 40 per cent alcohol. Years in wood give it a deep, coppery amber colour.

The brand lists sweet Cuban tobacco, tropical fruit, honey and brown spices over dry cocoa. In the glass there is biscuit, espresso, tobacco leaf, vanilla and orange marmalade on the nose, then dry woody spice, vanilla fudge, milk chocolate and a little overripe banana on the palate, and a finish of black pepper and espresso toffee.

Havana Club says to drink it neat, on the rocks or in cocktails. Its own Old Fashioned uses 40 ml of the rum with 5 ml of sugar syrup, aromatic bitters and orange bitters.
