CitrusMalt & grainCrisp appleHijos de Villa is a Mexican brand from Licores Veracruz, a family-run distiller based in Córdoba, Veracruz, that has been making rum, mezcal and tequila for around seventy years. The brand's pistol-shaped bottles take their cue from the revolver Pancho Villa carried in the Mexican Revolution.
This 50ml miniature is a gold tequila liqueur rather than a straight tequila. The spirit is distilled in Jalisco and certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council, and the bottle carries a maguey worm. The liqueur is a dark golden yellow, with tequila and herbal aromas, and the worm adds a delicate smoky edge to the flavour.
The worm is less exotic than it looks. Maguey worms have been eaten in Mexico for centuries, beginning with the Aztecs. They are caterpillars that live inside agave plants, and a 2023 study of the larvae found in Oaxacan mezcal bottles identified them as the agave redworm moth. They were only added to bottles of mezcal from the 1940s.
Pour it into a small glass and sip it slowly, neat, either chilled or at room temperature. A miniature is a tidy way to try the style, or to keep as a curiosity on the shelf.
