The story of Martini Riserva Bitter

Martini Riserva Speciale Bitter is a red Italian bitter from Martini & Rossi, the vermouth house, and it draws on the company's original recipe from 1872. Martini's master herbalist, Ivano Tonutti, chose three rare botanicals for it: saffron, Angostura and columba. It shares Italian artemisia with the Riserva Speciale vermouth and rests in the same cask.

It is made in Italy and bottled at 28.5 per cent. Neat it is assertive, bitter and spicy, with cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, rose, saffron and orange, softened by a little sweetness and a trace of liquorice. The finish is citrusy and floral.

Its natural home is the Negroni. The house version, named after Tonutti, stirs the bitter with gin and Martini Rubino vermouth over ice. For something longer, top it with soda and a slice of orange for an aperitivo, or build a spritz with sparkling wine and a splash of soda. Keep the measures modest and the ice plentiful.
