The story of Matusalem Clasico 10YO
Matusalem is Spanish for Methuselah, and the name plays on the old saying about being older than Methuselah, a nod to the long ageing behind the brand. It was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1872 by the brothers Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, and by the 1950s it was one of the island's leading premium rums, competing with Bacardi and Havana Club.
After 1959 the family went into exile in the United States, while the Cuban government kept making rum at the old Santiago factory under the name Ron Santiago. The Matusalem brand was relaunched in 2002, and the rum is now made in the Dominican Republic.
The Clasico is aged for ten years in oak barrels using the solera process and bottled at 40 per cent. Soft caramel aromas lead into a smooth palate, then oak and burnt caramel carry through a long finish with a toffee edge. It is a rum for slow drinking over a single large cube, or stirred into a rum old fashioned with a dash of bitters and a strip of orange peel.
