The story of Matusalem Solera 7 Yo

Matusalem began in 1872 in Santiago de Cuba, where two brothers from Spain, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, set up a rum distillery. They brought the solera method with them, a way of blending rums of different ages so the finished spirit keeps a steady, rounded character. After the 1959 revolution the family left Cuba, and today the rum is made in the Dominican Republic.

The Solera 7 is bottled at 40 per cent and carries a seven year age on the label. It is a dark, gently sweet rum. Vanilla and caramel lead, with coconut, sweet hazelnut and toasted wood behind them, and the finish dries out slowly with a lingering note of toffee.

It is made for mixing as much as sipping. Vanilla and toasted wood hold their own against lime and cola in a Cuba libre or a dirty mojito. Over one large cube it drinks easily too, and left in the glass for a few minutes it picks up roasted notes, spice and a little coffee.
