The story of Ratu Spiced Rum 5YO
Ratu is the super-premium range from the Rum Co. of Fiji, first launched in Fiji in 2014 and named after the Ratu, the chiefs who led the warriors known as Bati. The Spiced is the five year old in that line, and the one where the spice sets the style.
Like its siblings it is matured in charred oak and filtered through coconut shell charcoal, then bottled at 40 per cent. The nose is citrus and charred oak, the palate brings glazed orange with an intense vanilla note, and the finish stays warm with star anise and cinnamon.
That orange and anise combination points to how to use it. Over a single large cube with a wide strip of orange peel, it tastes closest to how it was built. For a long drink, build it tall with ginger beer and a wedge of lime, and drop a whole star anise into the glass to echo the finish. A dash of aromatic bitters in a short stirred drink suits it too, rather like an Old Fashioned made with rum.
