Rittenhouse Rye 750ml features a high proof American rye whiskey with bold spice character. This classic rye delivers caramel sweetness and oak depth for cocktails or sipping.
Rittenhouse Rye first appeared in 1934, soon after Prohibition ended, as Rittenhouse Square Straight Rye from the Continental Distilling Corporation of Philadelphia. It took its name from Rittenhouse Square in that city and was sold as a Pennsylvania rye. In 1948 the word Square was dropped and the whiskey was relaunched as a four year old bottled in bond. Heaven Hill, the Kentucky distiller based in Bardstown, owns the brand now.
The bottle is bottled in bond at 100 proof, which is 50 per cent, and is four years old. It follows the Pennsylvania style, with a mash bill that carries a high share of corn alongside the rye, so it is spicy but approachable. Heaven Hill describes a mahogany colour, with dried fruit, toffee and sweet pepper on the nose. The palate runs to cocoa, citrus, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla, and the finish lingers with a maple like spice.
That strength holds up well in a stirred drink. Rittenhouse suits a Manhattan, which is two parts rye to three quarters of a part of sweet vermouth with three dashes of Angostura bitters and a brandied cherry, and it is just as good in a Boulevardier.
