The story of Slane Irish Whiskey

Slane Irish Whiskey comes from the Conyngham family's estate at Slane Castle in Ireland's Boyne Valley, a castle better known for its rock concerts. Henry Mountcharles staged the first in 1981 with Thin Lizzy, and crowds have since grown to around 80,000. The whiskey launched in 2017, a partnership between the Conynghams and Brown-Forman, with Alex Conyngham as co-founder.

The style is a triple casked blend of single malt and single grain, bottled at 40 per cent in a black bottle. Heavily toasted, lightly charred virgin oak from Brown-Forman's cooperages gives toasted oak and vanilla. Seasoned casks that previously held American whiskey add caramel, plum, banana and butterscotch. Oloroso sherry casks from Spain bring raisin and spice, and Alex Conyngham rates the sherry as the cask with the most body.

The colour is rich toffee. The nose is fruit, caramel, butterscotch and vanilla with brown spice, the palate opens spicy before settling into caramel over dried fruit, and the finish is dried fruit and caramelised sugar.

It works neat, on the rocks or in classic cocktails. A tall glass with ginger ale and a slice of apple shows off the fruit.
